“How many dead bodies have I stepped over?” asks Memphis native Robert King, sitting in a hotel in some or another war zone. The answer may be “one too many” by the time he asks, yet the answer begs only more questions in turn. In a penetrating, tender exploration into the motivation of inquiry, British filmmakers Richard Parry and Vaughan Smith chronicle King over several years and many wars as he moves from aspiring photographer to accomplished photojournalist, from young man to adult, from Memphis to Bosnia and Iraq. This coming-of-age triptych of war, ambition and longing is made more treacherous because King’s soul refuses to harden along the way, leaving him always a little too close to an incoming mortar shell or, alternately, a well-deserved sob. Temporal pleasures occupy his sabbaticals until a lingering love begs re-examination of life itself. Hunting deer on his land east of Memphis on a frigid winter morn, the toll of documenting humanity comes into sharp focus and King is left to quietly consider his own.
