The doctors want to medicate away the voices in his head, but Charles Fihiol knows better. A bipolar paranoid schizophrenic, Charles has no fear of the invisible people who speak to him; he will tell you that they have, in fact, saved his life. Particularly Joanie, his one true love, who is none other than the reincarnation of Joan of Arc. So what if he has never seen her? It's a pesky problem, a small price to pay when you’re dating one of the most famous historical figures of all time. Fresh off his medication, Charles embarks on a 400-mile bicycle journey to New Orleans, in search of the real-life version of Joanie, who he believes may be waiting for him in a French Quarter bar. Documentary filmmakers David Redmon and Ashley Sabin come along for the ride. And what a ride it is! Along the way, Charles encounters a cast of real-life characters more outlandish and fascinating than anything you'd find in fiction. But nothing can compare to what happens when Charles reaches his ultimate destination. Redmon and Sabin have fashioned a true Southern Gothic tale, a documentary that unfolds like a Flannery O'Connor story, replete with colorful characters, grotesque themes, and startling twists. "Invisible Girlfriend" is an alarming, brilliant film that proves truth is not only stranger -- but more captivating, unsettling, and provocative -- than fiction.
