For some, the majestic ivory-billed woodpecker has become an icon of the primeval forest that once covered million of acres of the southeastern United States. Most of the centuries-old trees were felled for timber and to make way for agriculture after the Civil War. With the trees went the ivory-billed's home. By 1944, only a lone bird could be found, surrounded by devastation from logging. Believed to be extinct for decades, the Ivory-billed was rediscovered in 2004 in the swamps of Arkansas, about 100 miles from Memphis. Or was it? Controversy surrounded the rediscovery, but news about the woodpecker brought a glimmer of hope to the nearby town of Brinkley, where residents made plans to exploit a bird most had never even heard of before. Both heartbreaking and hilarious, GHOST BIRD is a must-see documentary for anyone concerned about our vanishing natural places and the species that live there. The soundtrack features The Black Keys, White Stripes, Sonny Terry, Zoƫ Keating and more.
