The tight, unnerving opening shots set the tone for this rich character study. Fine camera work by John Paul Clark enhances the story of double loser Jack, a comic who can't tell a joke and a gambler who can't win a dime. Dennis Phillippi (in real life a genuinely witty comedian and writer) is splendid as Jack who gets an ultimatum by his loan shark (a scary Patrick Cox). Although the resolution relies too much on a bromide and the end is oddly perfunctory, the John Harvey film delivers a solid punch (if not punchline). There's also a nice performance by Ric Chetter as the guy in the bar who holds all the cards.
