With America on the brink of a financial meltdown, families losing their homes to foreclosure, and Washington crafting rescue plans for the country's leading financial institutions, this film could not be timelier. I.O.U.S.A. boldly examines the rapidly growing national debt and its consequences for the U.S. and its citizens. Burdened with an ever-expanding government and military, increased international competition, overextended entitlement programs, and debts to foreign countries that are becoming impossible to honor, America must mend its spendthrift ways or face an economic disaster of epic proportions. Sundance veteran Patrick Creadon (WORDPLAY) helps demystify the nation's financial practices and policies by interweaving archival footage with economic data and candid interviews with Warren Buffett, Alan Greenspan, Paul O'Neill, Robert Rubin, and others, to paint a vivid and alarming profile of America's current economic situation.
But can a movie turn the ins and outs of debt and deficits into something dynamic, fun and even inspirational? I.O.U.S.A. does so by providing a humorous, provocative and ultimately inspirational look - one that is also consummately non-partisan -- at a passionate two-man crusade to halt our impending financial meltdown. This is the story of former U.S. Comptroller General Dave Walker (a/k/a the nation's top accountant), and Concord Coalition executive director Bob Bixby, who travel like town criers across America on what they call a "Fiscal Wake Up Tour." Town by town, they've been arming citizens with information about how we got into a sticky financial mess, why we must act right now to stop it, and what we can each do to begin to free the nation from the stranglehold of this colossal debt.
