Indie Memphis juror and renown film critic and interviewer Elvis Mitchell hosts two intimate conversations at this year’s festival, with Memphis filmmaker Craig Brewer and actor / director Giancarlo Esposito. At Indie Memphis, Elvis is also screening his recent documentary, THE BLACK LIST, which presents twenty prominent African Americans of various professions, disciplines and backgrounds, including Toni Morrison, Kareem Abdul-Jabbar, Vernon Jordan, Chris Rock, Richard D. Parsons, Zane and the Rev. Al Sharpton.
Memphis filmmaker Craig Brewer is a distinctively regional screenwriter and director known for using music to complement his storytelling. His films capture the complexion and experience of the American South, most famously in his Sundance Film Festival Audience Award Winner HUSTLE & FLOW, as well as BLACK SNAKE. He has screened a many of his past projects at previous Indie Memphis festivals, including shorts, music videos and works-in-progress, as well as his first feature, THE POOR AND HUNGRY. Craig’s most recent project is $5 COVER, an online music drama dedicated to the Memphis music scene. The 15-episode web series was created for MTV New Media, featuring an all-Memphis on- and off-screen team, and is scheduled to debut online in early 2009. |
