SUMMARY:The Fish Fall In Love
DESCRIPTION:Atieh’s singular passion is food\, and her small but popular
restaurant on the sleepy Caspian coast is her pride and joy. But when Az
 iz\, her former fiancé\, appears after a twenty-year absence\, the women
believe he has intentions of closing the restaurant\, so Atieh prepares
his favorite dishes\, one after the other\, in a desperate effort to co
nvince him otherwise. Loosely based on the Persian fable of Shahrazad an
d the Thousand Myths (A Thousand and One Nights)\, director Ali Raffi us
es the language of food to paint a richly textured portrait of life and
love on the northern coast of Iran. About the Director: Ali Raffi was
born in Isfahan\, Iran in 1938. He holds B.A. and M.A. degrees in Sociol
ogy\, and B.A.\, M.A. and Ph.D. degrees in Dramatic Arts from the Sorbon
ne University. He also holds a Higher Diploma in Film and Stage Directio
n from the International Theater University in France\, and a Diploma of
Acting from Charles Dulain in France. He was the head of the City Theat
er in Tehran from 1975 to 1978\, the dean of the Dramatic College from 1
977 to 1980\, and currently teaches at Tehran University. He has staged
numerous theater productions\, and has experience as a performer in mult
iple films and TV programs. The Fish Fall In Love is his first feature f
ilm. \n Global Lens is sponsored by Dorothy Kirsch.

SUMMARY:The Kite
DESCRIPTION:In director Randa Chahal Sabbag's ‘fairytale for troubled tim
es\,’ sixteen-year old Lamia must cross a border checkpoint between Leba
non and Israel to marry a man she has never met. Neither she nor her bet
rothed are eager to consummate a marriage to a stranger—a matter further
complicated by Lamia's surprising admission that she is in love with th
e Israeli soldier guarding the border. Sabbag's enchanting drama about m
arriage and tradition is underscored by delicate symbolism and artful re
ferences to politics of Lebanon's territories that have been annexed.\n
About the Director: Randa Chahal Sabbag was born in Tripoli\, Lebanon.
She studied film at the University of Vincennes and the School of Louis
Lumiére in France. She directed numerous documentaries\, short films\,
and television programs before her first feature film\, Sand Screens (19
 91). Her second feature film\, A Civilized People (1998)\, a black comed
y about the Lebanese Civil War\, was censored in Lebanon. She refused to
make edits to her film that the Ministry of Interior's military censors
proposed\, which resulted in her being vilified in the press and her fa
mily receiving death threats. In 2004\, she was awarded with the nation'
s highest honor\, a Chevalier of the Order of the Cedar\, for her contri
butions to Lebanon. The Kite is her third feature film. \n Global Lens i

SUMMARY:The Black List
DESCRIPTION:The traditional definition of the phrase 'blacklist' has been
rendered obsolete by the documentary THE BLACK LIST\, which seeks to bu
ry the negative weight of the term by allowing African-Americans to prov
ide an up-to-the-minute answer to the grim origins of 'blacklist.' In a
film that works as series of living portraits\, twenty prominent African
Americans of various professions\, disciplines and backgrounds offer th
eir own stories and insights on the struggles\, triumphs and joys of bla
ck life in this country and manage to re-define 'blacklist' for a new ce
ntury in the process. The film is presented as a series of vignettes --
a kind of living portraiture -- in which the subjects address the camera
directly as they tell their stories. The film was directed by the renow
ned portrait photographer and filmmaker\, Timothy Greenfield-Sanders\, f
rom a series of interviews conducted by Elvis Mitchell. Mitchell is neve
r seen on camera or heard\, thus allowing the subjects' own voices to re
main the focus. The actual title of the film itself\, THE BLACK LIST was
conceived of by Mitchell as an answer to the constant taint applied to
the word 'black' in Western culture. Those interviewed for the film come
from a vast and different collection of disciplines that draw from the
worlds of the arts\, sports\, politics\; the group assembled features lu
minaries such as Toni Morrison\, Kareem Abdul-Jabbar\, Vernon Jordan\, C
hris Rock\, Richard D. Parsons\, Zane and the Rev. Al Sharpton. Their ta
les of their lives begin with the personal\, and move into an area of la
rger social repercussion\, as the weight of their accomplishment on this
country and world come into focus. THE BLACK LIST is more than an enume
ration of obstacles overcome -- it's a singular view of America from a t
ype of insight and perspective rarely seen on screen in a way that empha
sizes the elegance and determination of the subjects.\n \n Director's Bi
 o: \nAs a photographer\, Timothy Greenfield-Sanders is highly regarded
for his strikingly intimate portraits of world leaders and major cultura
l figures. As a filmmaker\, he is best known for his documentary about t
he legendary musician\, Lou Reed.Greenfield-Sanders' film career started
in the mid-1970's when he attended the American Film Institute in Los A
ngeles. It was at AFI that he fell in love with portraiture while taking
photographs for the school of visiting dignitaries including Alfred Hit
chcock\, Bette Davis and Ingmar Bergman. Greenfield-Sanders got lighting
and posing tips from the masters and after receiving his MFA degree\, s
witched to portraiture full time.Greenfield-Sanders moved back to NYC wh
ere he started to photograph the art world (his undergraduate degree fro
m Columbia University was in Art History). In 1999\, twenty years later\
 , Greenfield-Sanders exhibited 700 portraits of artists\, dealers\, crit
ics\, collectors and curators. Full sets of all 700 of these images are
now in the collections of The Museum of Modern Art in New York and The M
useum of Fine Arts\, Houston. In the mid-1990's Greenfield-Sanders retur
ned to filmmaking with his first film\, "Lou Reed: Rock and Roll Heart".
He produced and directed this feature for PBS' American Masters Series.
The film premiered in the U.S. at Sundance and in Europe at The Berlin
 Film Festival. The film won a 1998 Grammy Award.In 2004\, Greenfield-San
ders produced and directed "Thinking XXX" for HBO\, a documentary based
 on the making of his best-selling book\, 'XXX: 30 Porn-Star Portraits'.T
o date\, fifteen books and catalogues have been published on Greenfield-
Sanders' portraiture\, including a monograph in 2001 and most recently\,
'Movie Stars'\, a collection of portraits of actors and film directors.
Timothy Greenfield-Sanders is a contributing photographer at Vanity Fair
. In 2005\, he was profiled on the American television show "60 Minutes"

SUMMARY:Bi the Way
DESCRIPTION: TENNESSEE PREMIERE Recent studies are suggesting that bise
xuality is drastically more widespread than is reported in census counts
. The iron curtain between gay and straight is crumbling. The Bible belt
is being unbuckled. And for young people\, dating a girl one week and a
guy the next is no big deal. Journeying through the changing sexual lan
dscape of America\, the directors of BI THE WAY investigate the latest s
cientific reports and social opinions on bisexuality\, while following f
ive members of the emerging “whatever generation” – teens and twenty-som
ethings who seem to be ushering in whole new sexual revolution.

SUMMARY:Neshoba
DESCRIPTION: REGIONAL PREMIERE NESHOBA tells the story of a Mississippi
town still divided about the meaning of justice\, 40 years after the mu
rders of three civil rights workers. Although Klansmen bragged openly\,
no one was held accountable until 2005\, when the State indicted and con
victed Preacher Edgar Ray Killen\, an 80-year-old notorious racist.\n \n
Interweaving new and archival footage\, the feature-length documentary p
aints a picture of Neshoba County\, using the murder case as a barometer
of what has changed for blacks and whites since 1964. Through exclusive
interviews with Killen\, the victims’ families\, and a diverse group of
black and white Neshoba County citizens\, the film explores whether the
prosecution of one unrepentant Klansman is justice sufficient to erase
the stain of the past and promote racial healing.\n \n After the film\,

SUMMARY:I.O.U.S.A.
DESCRIPTION:With America on the brink of a financial meltdown\, families
losing their homes to foreclosure\, and Washington crafting rescue plans
for the country's leading financial institutions\, this film could not
be timelier. I.O.U.S.A. boldly examines the rapidly growing national deb
t and its consequences for the U.S. and its citizens. Burdened with an e
ver-expanding government and military\, increased international competit
ion\, overextended entitlement programs\, and debts to foreign countries
that are becoming impossible to honor\, America must mend its spendthri
ft ways or face an economic disaster of epic proportions. Sundance veter
an Patrick Creadon (WORDPLAY) helps demystify the nation's financial pra
ctices and policies by interweaving archival footage with economic data
and candid interviews with Warren Buffett\, Alan Greenspan\, Paul O'Neil
l\, Robert Rubin\, and others\, to paint a vivid and alarming profile of
America's current economic situation. \n \nBut can a movie turn the ins
and outs of debt and deficits into something dynamic\, fun and even ins
pirational? I.O.U.S.A. does so by providing a humorous\, provocative and
ultimately inspirational look - one that is also consummately non-parti
san -- at a passionate two-man crusade to halt our impending financial m
eltdown. This is the story of former U.S. Comptroller General Dave Walke
r (a/k/a the nation's top accountant)\, and Concord Coalition executive
director Bob Bixby\, who travel like town criers across America on what
they call a "Fiscal Wake Up Tour." Town by town\, they've been arming ci
tizens with information about how we got into a sticky financial mess\,
why we must act right now to stop it\, and what we can each do to begin
to free the nation from the stranglehold of this colossal debt.\n \n Dir
ector's Bio: Patrick Creadon was born in Chicago and is a 1989 graduate
of the University of Notre Dame. He began his career as one of the youn
gest cameramen in the history of PBS\, shooting and producing cinema-ver

d his Master's Degree in Cinematography at the American Film Institute\,
where his thesis film (on which he served as Director of Photography) w
as nominated for a student Academy Award. As a cameraman his work has ap
peared on every major network\, and he has also done work for Paramount
 Pictures\, Warner Brothers\, Sony\, Universal Studios\, and Disney. Crea

SUMMARY:Song Sung Blue
DESCRIPTION: REGIONAL PREMIERE SONG SUNG BLUE tells the alternately ins
piring and tragic love story of Lightning & Thunder\, a homegrown Milwau
kee husband and wife singing duo who pay tribute to the music of Neil Di
amond. The film goes backstage into the personal lives of this brave cou
ple – from their humble beginnings more than 20 years ago through the mo
st dramatic chapters in the lives of these authentic American dreamers.\
n \nSONG SUNG BLUE is about the uniquely American ability to invent one’
s self and strive for a seemingly impossible goal. It’s about fleeting c
elebrity and love and about a couple who manages to maintain their passi
on for one another amid the vicissitudes of life.\n \nSong Sung Blue...
 everybody knows one.

\n Global Lens i

made up of musicians with and without learning disabilities\, which make
s the bands' survival a precarious negotiation between two different wor

rehearsal rooms\, studios and gigs. Home life and band-life\; from invis

DESCRIPTION: MEMPHIS PREMIERE Shot in Nashville\, MAKE-OUT WITH VIOLENC
E is a genre-bending tale of a boy trying to fulfill his unrequited love

t teenage melodrama with the strange gravity of classic coming of age st
ories.\n \nThe film tells the story of twin brothers Patrick and Carol D
arling\, newly graduated from high school and struggling to come to term
s with the mysterious disappearance of their friend\, the bright and bea
utiful Wendy Hearst. When a drive through the countryside surrounding th
eir suburban community leads to the discovery of Wendy’s mysteriously an
imated corpse\, the boys secretly transport the undead Wendy to an empty
house in hopes of somehow bringing her back to life.\n \nAs the swelter
ing summer pushes on\, they must maintain the appearance of normalcy for
their friends and family as they search for ways to revive the Wendy th
ey once knew\, or\, failing that\, to satisfy their own quests for love
